HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Mississippi Valley State volleyball completed three matches at the Betty Austin Invitational, highlighted by a five-set battle against South Carolina State.
The Delta Devils captured the first two sets against the Bulldogs before falling in five. MVSU also competed against Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State during the tournament.
MVSU vs. South Carolina State
Mississippi Valley State opened the invitational with a strong start against South Carolina State, winning the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-20. The Delta Devils recorded 10 kills with a .280 hitting percentage in the opening frame.
South Carolina State responded by taking the next three sets, 25-20, 25-19 and 15-6, to secure the 3-2 victory.
Taylor Wooten led the Delta Devils with a double-double, finishing with 13 kills and 11 digs. She also recorded three service aces and contributed to two blocks.
Aubrie Walker added 10 kills, nine digs, three service aces and two block assists.
Brooklyn Brunt finished with nine kills, while
Aniyah Moore added six kills and three block assists.
Erin Mims directed the offense with 36 assists to go along with nine digs, two service aces and two block assists.
Ashlynn Hawkins collected 12 digs, while
Dashaun Pinesette added 11. MVSU finished the match with 61 digs, 10 service aces and seven team blocks.
MVSU vs. Maryland Eastern Shore
The Delta Devils fell to Maryland Eastern Shore in straight sets, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-14.
MVSU battled throughout a competitive second set that featured seven ties and two lead changes. The Delta Devils produced eight kills in the frame before UMES closed the set with a late run.
Brunt and Moore led the MVSU attack with five kills apiece.
Madison Conley and Wooten followed with four kills each.
Kameryn Browne handed out 16 assists and added a service ace.
Pinesette anchored the defense with a match-high 18 digs. Wooten recorded seven digs and two service aces, while Conley contributed three block assists. The Delta Devils finished with five service aces and four team blocks.
MVSU vs. Delaware State
Mississippi Valley State concluded its appearance at the invitational with a 3-0 setback against Delaware State. The Hornets won the match by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-20.
The Delta Devils showed steady offensive improvement throughout the match. After hitting -.067 in the opening set, MVSU improved to .150 in the second frame and .212 in the third. The Delta Devils recorded 13 kills during the final set.
Walker led MVSU with nine kills, one service ace and two block assists. Brunt, Moore and Wooten each contributed five kills. Moore also recorded four block assists.
Mims and Browne distributed 11 assists apiece, while Hawkins led the back row with seven digs. Wooten added six digs and two block assists.
Hannah St. Croix supplied MVSU's lone solo block as the Delta Devils finished with six team blocks.
