THE DELTA | Taylor Wooten recorded nine kills, and
Aniyah Moore delivered five blocks as Mississippi Valley State University volleyball fell to Dillard, 3-0 (10-25, 20-25, 21-25), Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
The Delta Devils found more offensive rhythm over the final two sets, combining for 25 kills during that stretch, but were unable to extend the nonconference matchup. MVSU moved to 1-8 on the season.
Wooten paced Valley with nine kills on 22 attempts, committing just two attack errors for a .318 hitting percentage. She added a service ace to finish with a team-high 10 points.
Moore contributed on both sides of the net, posting five kills on a .300 hitting percentage while leading MVSU with two solo blocks and three block assists. Her effort helped the Delta Devils finish with a 6-5 advantage in team blocks.
Aubrie Walker added six kills, three block assists, three digs and a service ace.
Brooklyn Brunt and
Madison Conley chipped in three kills apiece, while
Hannah St. Croix and
Kameryn Browne each contributed two.
Browne directed the offense with a team-leading 16 assists, and
Erin Mims added nine.
Taylor Wilson anchored the back row with 10 digs, followed by
Ashlynn Hawkins with six.
After dropping the opening set, Valley responded with its most efficient offensive frame in the second, hitting .281 with 12 kills and only three attack errors. Wooten and Moore supplied four kills apiece, while MVSU registered four team blocks. The improved execution kept Valley within striking distance, but Dillard secured the set, 25-20.
The Delta Devils carried that fight into the third, opening a 5-2 lead behind two early kills from Wooten. After Dillard moved ahead, 10-5, MVSU rallied to tie the score at 11-11 and again at 12-12. Valley later pulled within 21-19 and fought off two match points with consecutive Walker kills before Dillard finished the set, 25-21.
Wooten and Walker each recorded four kills in the final frame as MVSU produced a match-best 13 kills in the set.
Valley finished with 30 kills, 28 assists, 23 digs and two service aces. Dillard was led by Neveah Bax, who recorded 16 kills.
Mississippi Valley State will open Southwestern Athletic Conference play at home against Texas Southern on Friday, Sept. 25. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
