Ray Caldwell enters his third season as the Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach at Mississippi Valley State University. As Quarterback Coach, Caldwell was instrumental in leading Jackson State University to two consecutive Eastern Division Titles and two SWAC Championship Game appearances in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, his signal callers passed for 2,431 yards and 16 passing touchdowns and 8 rushing touchdowns. In 2012 his signal callers passed for 2,576 yards and 15 passing touchdowns and 14 rushing touchdowns. He comes to Mississippi Valley after spending two seasons coaching under the leadership of Coach Rick Comegy at JSU. He also has coached at another Mississippi institution of higher learning, Belhaven University serving as Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach for nine seasons.
In 2003, the team boasted the nation's #1 ranked passing offense as it rolled up 4,830 total yards (4,221 passing --- 609 rushing) and 47 touchdowns, the most productive offensive output in the history of the program. In 2004, the Blazers amassed 3,688 total yards and finished as the NAIA's sixth-ranked passing offense. In 2005, the Blazers added more balance to the aerial attack, finishing as the NAIA's second-ranked passing offense and with only their second 1,000 yard rushing effort in the program's history. In 2006, the Blazers offense staked its claim again as the nation's #1 ranked passing offense (314.1 yards per game), 11th nationally in scoring offense (30.30 points per game), and 13th nationally in total offense (362.80 yards) under Coach Caldwell. In 2009, the offense had moments of excellence, but still need to find consistency. The 2009 season also saw a 1,000+ yard receiver in Cordario Calvin and offensive lineman Jacob Phillips signed a free agent NFL contract with the Seattle Seahawks. In 2010, the offense piled up 386.4 yards of offense per game and Calvin went on to sign an NFL free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Caldwell has coached three All-American players and 30 All Mid-South Conference selections. He was recently selected as an 2017 offensive intern for the Los Angeles Chargers working with the quarterbacks in Mini Camp and Training Camp. He also an offensive intern for Training Camp 2008 for the Dallas Cowboys and Training Camp 2007 by the Detroit Lions of the NFL and worked with the offensive staff.
Prior to arriving at Belhaven, Coach Caldwell served as an offensive intern with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2002 season.
He spent five years at Southwest Baptist University in Missouri, where he held several positions, including Co-Offensive Coordinator. From 1994-1997, he was the Running Backs Coach at Middle Georgia College.
Caldwell, a native of Frankfort, Kentucky, and his wife, Aleisha, have one daughter (Olivia), and one son Ean.
Coach Caldwell graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in 1994 and completed his Masters of Arts in Education Administration at Southwest Baptist in 2001. In 2013, Caldwell earned a 2nd Masters degree in Sports Administration at Belhaven University in Jackson, MS.
