Richard “Dell” Cannon enters his fifth year on staff for the Mississippi Valley State men’s basketball program. The Lyon, Miss. native previously spent three years (2007-10) as a graduate assistant for MVSU.
Cannon was a part of two SWAC Tournament coaching staffs at MVSU, including in 2008 under James Green and 2012 under Sean Woods. He has coached a host of talented players including Larry Cox (now playing in China), Stanford Speech (head coach at Jim Hill High School), Carl Lucas (SWAC Tournament MVP) and Paul Crosby (Honorable Mention All-American).
Prior to his time as a coach, Cannon played two seasons at MVSU from 2005-07 after transferring from Coahoma Community College. He helped lead the Delta Devils to a SWAC regular season title and an NIT berth in 2007. During his senior year, he averaged 7.3 points and 4.2 rebounds.
Before coming to MVSU, he made a name for himself at Coahoma Community College where he led the team to the Region 23 Tournament in 2005. He prepped at Coahoma County High School.
