Homecoming Schedule
ITTA BENA – Following a week off after three consecutive games on the road, Mississippi Valley State is rested and ready to return to the confines of Rice-Totten Stadium.
The Delta Devils (1-3, 1-1 SWAC) will host the SWAC’s hottest team, Alabama A&M, on Saturday at 2 p.m. for homecoming.
It’ll mark the 25
th meeting between the two schools. The Bulldogs (5-0, 4-0 SWAC) hold a 17-7 advantage over the Delta Devils in the series.
“In my three years here, (they’re) probably the best football team I’ve seen in the conference,” MVSU head coach Karl Morgan said Monday during his weekly press conference at Shoney’s of Greenwood. “They are operating on all cylinders.”
MVSU is coming off a 45-14 loss at Northwestern State on Sept. 22 when the Delta Devils lost quarterback Eddie Ivory with a broken thumb. Garrick Jones, who started the season opener, is slated to return under center on Saturday against Alabama A&M.
Meanwhile, MVSU senior running back Brandon Stansell continues to lead the SWAC in rushing yards per game (95.0) while Trey Bateaste has rushed for a touchdown in each of Valley’s four games this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Delta Devils continue to make a name for themselves. MVSU is ranked No. 2 in FCS in total defense, allowing only 247.5 yards per game.
Alabama A&M is coming off a 38-17 win over defending champion Grambling State in which AAMU quarterback Deaunte Mason threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns.
“The thing that’s different about them is that they’re scoring points on offense,” said Morgan. “Whereas in the past they were a good defensive team…..”
