Hokies defeats Delta Devils, 70-49

Box Score BLACKSBURG, Va. -- For the first 20 minutes Monday, Mississippi Valley State looked just as good as its ACC opponent Virginia Tech.

But the Hokies proved to be too much for the Delta Devils in the second half as they routed Valley 70-49 at Cassell Coliseum.

MVSU (0-6) went into halftime trailing just 30-24 against a Virginia Tech that came into Monday's game with a 7-1 record. Davon Usher came off the bench and scored 10 first half points to kept the Delta Devils within striking distance.

But Valley struggled to make shots throughout the night and finished the game with a 25.7 field goal percentage. The Delta Devils hit 4-of-29 three-pointers with Usher accounting for all four made shots.

Matt Smith was a defensive juggernaut for the Delta Devils as the freshman forward had a career-high five blocks to go with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Darius Tomlin, a freshman guard from Jackson, Tenn., also had a notable performance with a career-best 15 points.

MVSU held the rebounding advantage for most of the night and forced 15 Virginia Tech turnovers.

Usher led Valley with 19 points and has now scored in double-figures for each of his first six games as a Delta Devil. Julius Francis chipped in four points and seven rebounds.

MVSU will be off until Dec. 19 when they travel to Peoria, Ill. to face Bradley at 7 p.m.
