LORMAN -- Marquiz Baker scored 21 first half points Saturday to lead Alcorn State to a 72-67 victory over rival Mississippi Valley State at the Dave Whitney Complex.
The win marked the Braves' first victory over the Delta Devils in the last five meetings.
After tying the game at 21, Alcorn State (6-14, 4-1 SWAC) went on a 15-3 run over the last 7:56 minutes to take a 36-24 halftime lead. Valley (1-13, 1-3 SWAC) made a late run at Alcorn and cut the lead to four, 71-67, with 41 seconds left. But the Delta Devils missed a pair of shots and free throws down the stretch that sealed the win for the Braves.
Alcorn limited the SWAC's leading scorer, Davon Usher, to just 10 points on 3-of-14 shots and the Delta Devils struggled from the free throw line, converting just 18-of-39 (46.2 percent).
MVSU did get a career-high performance from Darryl Marshall who led the Delta Devils with 21 points. Valley's Matt Smith added 12 points and seven rebounds and two blocks.
Baker led all scorers with 27 while LeAntwan Luckett added 19 for the Braves, who shot 45.6 percent from the field.
MVSU will be at Southern on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
