ITTA BENA -- Mississippi Valley State defeated Alabama State 67-63 Monday at the Harrison HPER Complex to win its second conference game of the season.
The Devilettes (5-9, 2-1 SWAC) used a dominating performance from junior point guard Joncyee Sanders (21 points, five rebounds) and Alia Frank (22 points, 11 rebounds) to take down the Lady Hornets.
It was a back-and-forth matchup but in the end MVSU first-year head coach Elvis Robinson earned his first home conference win.
Sanders' 21 points marked a career-high in her first year as a Devilette. The Brandon, Miss. native made 7-of-10 shots, including 3-of-4 from behind the arch. She also contributed a game-high four assists and a pair of blocks.
Valley shot 36.2 percent from the field and made 7-fo-14 three-pointers.
Brittney Howard led ASU with 12 points while Ashley Jones added 10 off the bench.
MVSU will be at rival Alcorn State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
