ITTA BENA -- Rival games seem to bring out the best in Davon Usher. And Saturday night was no exception.
The junior guard, who scored 26 at Jackson State last month, scorched Alcorn State with 30 points as the Delta Devils rolled over the visiting Braves, 80-75 at the Harrison HPER Complex.
It marked the sixth straight game that Usher has scored in double-figures and his fifth time putting up at least 20 points. It was the second time this season he has reached the 30-point mark.
Valley (4-18, 4-8 SWAC) controlled the game throughout the first half and only trailed once. The Delta Devils held a 34-21 lead over the Braves (9-18, 7-5 SWAC) at halftime.
Despite Valley holding a 20-point lead with just over 4 minutes left, the Braves stormed back with a host of 3-pointers to cut the lead to single digits the final seconds. Alcorn went on a 18-7 run in the final 3:38.
Devonte Hampton led the Braves with 21 points while LeAntwan Luckett added 15. Anthony Evans and Marquiz Baker chipped in 12 points each. Baker, Luckett and Anthony Nieves all fouled out during the game.
Usher, ranked second in the SWAC in scoring, made 8 of 15 shots, including 6 of 10 from behind the arch. He went 8 of 8 from the free throw line. Darryl Marshall added 13 points while Matt Smith and Cordarius Samples chipped in 11 each.
MVSU shot 40 percent from the field and made 30 of 38 free throws.
MVSU will be back in action Monday at 7:30 p.m. against Southern University.
