Devilettes capture second straight win

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- DeRita Silas came through in a big way on Saturday.

The sophomore guard sunk a pair of free throws with three seconds left that sealed a 56-54 win for Mississippi Valley State at Alabama State at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The win was the Devilettes second straight and kept Valley undefeated in conference play heading into Monday's matchup at Alabama A&M.

MVSU (3-10, 2-0 SWAC) trailed for most of the second half but took the 53-52 lead after a 3-point play by Jasmyne Sanders. Her sister, Joncyee Sanders, extended Valley's lead to 54-52 with a free throw at the 11 second mark.

But the Lady Hornets evened things up when Taila Arrington tied the game at 54 with a layup with 3 seconds on the clock. Then, an ASU foul followed by Silas' free throws gave MVSU the victory.

ASU had one last opportunity but Nakiya Smith's jumper didn't bounce in.

MVSU's Jasmyne Sanders led all scorers with 19 points to go with seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals. She was the lone Valley player to score in double-figures. Joncyee Sanders and A'Shanti Weathers chipped in nine points apiece for the Devilettes, who shot 38.6 percent from the field.

Valley made just 9-of-20 of its free throw attempts.

Danielle Gazaway led the Lady Hornets with 12 points.

MVSU will be at Alabama A&M on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
