Delta Devils suffer homecoming loss to Panthers

ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Mississippi Valley State scored three fourth quarter touchdowns Saturday, but it wasn't enough to come away with a homecoming victory over Prairie View A&M.

The Panthers defeated the Delta Devils, 52-19, at Rice-Totten Stadium in front of a homecoming crowd of 7,829. Prairie View built a 38-0 halftime lead which started with a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown to open the game by Johnta Hebert. After a pair of field goals in the first quarter in the third quarter, the Panthers poured in 25 points in the second quarter.

Prairie View added 14 more points in the third quarter using a 83-yard touchdown pass to Greg Thurmond and a 2-yard touchdown run by Jovante Ham.

During the fourth quarter, the Panthers led 52-0 before the Delta Devils started to strike. MVSU's Patrick Ivy threw two touchdowns to Julian Stafford -- the first one for 51 yards -- and rushed for another. But it was too late to mount a comeback and the Panthers sailed to the 52-19 win over the Delta Devils.

Ivy completed 9-of-17 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. He also rushed for 60 yards on the ground after replacing starter Quantavius Peterson midway through the game. Julian Stafford led the team with eight catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Davon Jones had nine takles (2.5 for loss) for the Delta Devils while Le'Trey Jones added five tackles (one for loss) and an interception.

"I hate it for the kids, not for (me)," said MVSU head coach Rick Comegy. "...I thought we were riding a nice wave....but i think we just ran into a wall today..."

MVSU will be off next week before hitting the road to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 1.
