ITTA BENA, Miss. -- For the past three years, Mississippi Valley State has gotten the best of Texas Southern, beating the Tigers in the last three meetings and eight out of the last 10 years.
Now, with a new head coaching staff the Delta Devils hope to extend its winning streak against TSU on Saturday when the two teams meet at 7 p.m. at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.
MVSU (1-4, 0-3 SWAC), who is coming off a loss to Alabama A&M, will face a much-improved TSU team that started the season on a four-game win streak before falling to Alabama State, 38-3, last week. The Tigers scored at least 30 points in their first four games of the season.
After being held to just one catch against Alcorn State, MVSU senior wide receiver Julian Stafford emerged back on the scene against Alabama A&M last week with four receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns. So far this season, he has 22 catches for 534 yards and five touchdowns. His five receiving touchdowns are a career-high for Stafford, who finished with three in 2013 and four in 2012.
MVSU head football coach Rick Comegy said he hopes the Memphis native can continue his success while attributing the chances of future success for the Delta Devils to a balanced attack.
"He's doing tremendous for us," Comegy said of Stafford during the weekly SWAC Teleconference. ".....We just have to find a way to get him the ball more often, I think. I think he played out of his slump he had a week ago....But we have to put the ball in other hands to keep people off balanced and we have to be able to run the football a little bit more. And I think when that begins to happen, we'll begin gelling like a team."
For the first time last week, MVSU played one quarterback for the entire game. Quantavius Peterson, a junior college transfer from Coahoma Community College, threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns along with a pair of interceptions. The plan, said Comegy, is for the Shelby, Miss. native to continue to grow in the new system and help the Delta Devils get over the hump.
"I think he'll be fine as we go down the road," said Comegy. "If we stick with a guy like that he can help us."
