ITTA BENA, Miss. -- In its third of six consecutive home games, the Mississippi Valley State volleyball team succumbed to rival Jackson State, 3-0, at the Charles Lackey Recreational Center on the MVSU campus.
The Lady Tigers defeated the Devilettes 25-13, 25-21, 25-15 in the first conference game for Valley (2-14, 0-1 SWAC). Prior to the game, MVSU recognized breast cancer survivors as a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Devilettes had their best performance in the second set, leading the Lady Tigers through nearly half of the period. Valley made a late push in the set, rallying off three straight points to cut JSU's lead to 23-21 thanks in part to a pair of kills by junior Halle Gayten. But an attack error by Gayten and a service ace from JSU's Passion Edmonson closed out the second set.
JSU never relinquished control in the third set, racing out to a 10-3 lead and never looking back.
Halee Clark led the Devilettes with a team-high eight kills while Gayten did a little of everything: five kills, six digs and three blocking assists. Alexandria Garland had 19 of 20 assists for Valley.
MVSU will be at home Friday and Saturday, beginning with Alabama A&M at 4:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday against Alabama State.
