Washington scores 18 in road loss at Mississippi State

STARVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi Valley State's Jordan Washington was just one point shy of tying a career high in points Monday night, but unfortunately he and the Delta Devils couldn't come away with a road win at Mississippi State.

The Bulldogs used its dominant low post game to overpower the Delta Devils in a 89-68 victory over Valley at the Humprey Coliseum in the second game of the season for both teams.

Washington, a Memphis native, scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shots, including a trio of 3-pointers. He was just one point shy of tying his career high of 19, which he put up last season against Tougaloo College. Tyler Corley chipped in 17 points on 5-of-18 shots from the field and his former junior college teammate, Isaac Williams, added 11 in his first start.

After being down by as many as 33 in the second half, MVSU cut it to 75-55 with just over eight minutes remaining. But, the Bulldogs went back to their original game plan and feed their big men -- Gavin Ware and Roquez Johnson -- and regained momentum.

Ware and Johnson combined for 39 points and 13 rebounds.

Valley had 10 less turnovers than the Bulldogs, who finished with 26. MVSU scored 26 points off turnovers and had 10 fast break points.

The Delta Devils shot 35.3 percent and made 12-of-18 free throws.

MVSU will be on the road at Tulane on Thursday at 7 p.m.
