CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Mississippi Valley State's fast-paced offense was clicking for most of the first half Wednesday as the Delta Devils gave Oregon State all it could handle.
The Beavers, however, used their height advantage to win in the rebounding column and hold off Valley, 74-50, at Gill Coliseum in front of 3,656 fans.
MVSU, who was 2,500 miles away from home, pushed Oregon State to the limit. The Delta Devils trailed just 16-14 with nearly 11 minutes left in the first half before the Beavers extended its lead to 40-28 at halftime.
OSU went on to outscore Valley 34-22 in the second half. The Delta Devils did a great job defensively, limiting the Beavers to just 39 percent shooting, including just 29 percent from behind the 3-point line.
"(Oregon State) didn't shoot great. We just gave up offensive boards," MVSU head coach Andre Payne told the media. "My hopes are we take these bumps and bruises and learn from them. If we can take our style of play into the SWAC, where the post players are going to be 6-6, 6-7, we can compete."
Jordan Washington led the Delta Devils with 17 points, marking the seventh time the Memphis native has scored in double-figures this season. DeAngelo Priar added his first career double-double: 14 points and 10 rebounds. Isaac Williams (9) and Latrell Love (6) combined to score 15 points off the bench.
Gary Payton II led OSU with 24 points, 16 rebounds and four steals.
MVSU will be off until Dec. 14 when they travel to Northwestern. Tipoff for that game is set for 5 p.m.
