Lady Jags end Devilettes' win streak

Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. -- A three-game win streak came to a close Monday night for the Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team. 

The Devilettes (8-16, 7-6 SWAC) lost a close one, 70-65, at Southern University. 

Joncyee Sanders filled up the boxscore for MVSU with a team-high 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Jasmyne Sanders added 14 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks while Ashley Beals chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks. 

With the win, the Lady Jaguars swept the regular season series. Southern defeated Valley 76-67 last month. 

It was a tight matchup throughout the entire game, with the teams going into halftime deadlocked at 33. 

And with the game tied at 63 with under two minutes on the clock, Southern took advantage of an Olivia Kennedy foul on a three-point shot by Kendra Coleman. Coleman then converted the three ensuing free throws to take the lead and the momentum. 

Coleman again came through for the Lady Jaguars in the final seconds when she made a pair of free throws to seal the game. 

Jasmine Jefferson paced Southern with 16 points. 

MVSU will be back in action Saturday when they host Texas Southern at 3 p.m. at The Pinnacle o the campus of Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale.
