ITTA BENA – Time is winding down.
Fall camp is in the rearview mirror and Mississippi Valley State is just two days away from opening the 2014 season when the Delta Devils host University of Faith on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Rice-Totten Stadium.
Not only will Saturday mark the start of the 2014 season, but it also represents the beginning of the Rick Comegy era. With a new coaching staff, a healthy crop of newcomers and a list of talented returners, the future looks bright for the Delta Devils.
MVSU will be facing a startup Glory Eagle team that is playing its first-ever season of college football. The University of Faith fell 65-10 last week at Edward Waters College. Despite the lopsided loss, Valley won't be overlooking a team that is searching for its first win in school history.
"They're an unknown entity," said MVSU head coach Rick Comegy. "You don't have any film on them….I hear that they're a big team. I know their coach coached semi-pro football a year ago or so…..There going to be some older guys, some real physical guys that we're going to be playing. And I think we have to be ready for that occasion because you never what you're going to face."
Meanwhile, MVSU boasts a roster that includes 35 players with game experience, including preseason All-American cornerback Avery Boykin and first team All-SWAC selection Julian Stafford. However, the position that everyone has seemed to focus on is the quarterback job which has consisted of a competition between last season's starter Patrick Ivy, junior college transfer Quantavius Peterson and newcomer Dontrinell Scott.
Comegy said Thursday that Peterson, a Coahoma Community College transfer, will get the nod on Saturday.
"I think we have a solid starter now. We're going to go with Quantavius Peterson as our No. 1 guy at this point," he said. "We're going to put him in there and see what he can do. We've got some great guys backing him up – (Patrick) Ivy and (Dontrinell) Scott who can do a good job for us."
As for the running back position, former linebacker DeShawn Davis has billed himself as a forced to be reckoned with. He'll be joined in the backfield by freshman Charlie Crenshaw, former wide receiver Jerrell Moore and a host of others. At Thursday's press conference Comegy also highlighted freshman fullback Gabriel Jackson who is hoping to start his career off with a bang.
Tickets can be purchased for Saturday's game in advance for just $15 at the MVSU cashier's window.
