MVSU volleyballs falls in two tough matchups Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENTON, Texas -- On the final day of the North Texas Invitational, the Mississippi Valley State volleyball team once again found itself playing against some stiff competition. The Devilettes, who fell to a talented Missouri team on Friday, were unable to lay claim to their first win of the season, falling to North Texas and Northwestern State, 3-0, on Saturday at the North Texas Volleyball Center.

In the first game, against North Texas, the Devilettes fell 25-11 in the first set before putting up a fight in ensuing set before losing 25-16. North Texas finished off the game with a 25-10 win in the final set.

In the second set, North Texas held a commanding 11-2 lead before Valley came storming back. Bianca Watkins's kill on an assist from Alexandria Garland started off the run and was followed by an Mean Green error and a service ace by Kayondra Hood, which cut the lead to 13-6. North Texas put up six straight points before an attack error put the run to an end. Soon after, MVSU's Ilaisha Hale had a kill but the Devilettes were out of reach, down 20-8.

The third set was close throughout the start with the teams going back and forth with points until the Mean Green went on a 7-0 run to give them a commanding 11-4 advantage. Brianna Watkins' kill -- which came on an assist from her twin sister Bianca -- stopped the run. Then three errors by North Texas cut the lead to 12-8, but that would be as close as Valley would get.

Halee Clark paced the Devilettes with four kills and Brianna Watkins led the way in hitting percentage with .600.

MVSU vs. Northwestern State
In the final game for the Devilettes, Northwestern State won in straight sets (25-8, 25-6, 25-9). Halle Gayten and Cynthia Richardson each had kills apiece in the game for Valley, which fell to 0-3 on the season. Steffi Rodriguez had eight of the team's 24 digs and Alexandria Garland accounted for four assists.

The Devilettes will get a couple days off before getting back on the road to face New Orleans on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m.
