MVSU volleyball to play first home game Wednesday

ITTA BENA, Miss. -- The Mississippi Valley State volleyball team is set to play its first home game of the season on Wednesday when the Devilettes host Fisk University at 6 p.m. at the Charles Lackey Recreational Building on the MVSU campus.

It'll mark the first home game of the season not only for the MVSU players, but also for first-year head coach Douglas Hunter.

"Everyone is excited and elated to be playing at home for the first time this season," said Hunter. "And the players are looking forward to showing off their abilites to their fellow students. It is always a Hallmark moment to play your first home match with an intent to show the growth and development of the program."

MVSU (1-7) earned its first win of the season last week with a 3-2 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and hope to repeat that result Wednesday against the Lady Bulldogs. So far this season, Valley's seniors have played a key role. Halee Clark, a senior from Denton, Texas, leads the team with 44 kills and Ilashia Hale is third on the team with 21.

Fellow senior Alexandria Garland, of Inglewood, Calif., has 101 assists this season and averages four per set. Meanwhile, senior Steffi Rodriguez has been consistent on defense with 61 digs.

But junior Halle Gayten is not to be overlooked. The New Orleans native was named to the All-Tournament Team last week during the Chattanooga Classic. She's second on the team in kills (26) and is first in blocks with 15.

MVSU fought hard but fell in three games at the Chattanooga Classic last week while Fisk University (4-10) is looking to rebound from a 3-2 loss to Cumberland University on Saturday.
