GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Mississippi Valley State's high-scoring offense surpassed the 70-point mark for the second straight game Monday night, but unfortunately the Delta Devils couldn't capture the victory.
Alabama State upended the speedy Delta Devils, 88-76, at the Leflore County Civic Center.
MVSU's bench carried the load Monday night, accounting for 49 points. Jeffrey Simmons, a senior from Greenwood, led the Delta Devils with a season-high 20 points in a reserve role. Billy Jackson, a Coahoma Community College transfer, contributed a career-high 13 points including a pair of 3-pointers.
"Bench players did a remarkable job," said MVSU head coach Andre Payne. "We just have the get the rest of the team on the same page."
Rakwan Kelly, who had a career-high 13 points Saturday, put up 11 points for MVSU on Monday in 30 minutes of action.
In his first start against a conference opponent, Latrell Love was a strong inside presence for the Delta Devils. He got to the free throw line often -- he made 8-of-13 shots from the charity stripe -- and used some shifty moves to get past ASU defenders. Love finished with a career-high 18 points while converting 5-of-6 shots from the field. The Minneapolis, Minn. native also had a pair of blocks.
MVSU trailed by just seven points at halftime, 37-30, but the Hornets extended their lead to as much as 20 in the second half.
The Delta Devils were efficient at the free throw line, making 25-of-36 shots.
MVSU will be back on the court Saturday at rival Alcorn State. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. in Lorman.
