Delta Devils Fall to Jaguars in SWAC Opener

ITTA BENA, Miss. --- The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University dropped a 50-13 decision to the Southern University Jaguars to begin Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The game was nationally televised on ESPNU.

"I think we left about three touchdowns on the field," said Head Coach Rick Comegy. "I expected us to play better after the game against New Mexico."

Southern scored six on their opening drive, after an unsuccessful point after hit the uprights.  The Delta Devils' first possession ended with a 31-yard punt by Ruben Piraquive. The Jaguars put more points on the board on their next drive, taking the score to 13-0.  Unable to gain traction during their next drive, Mississippi Valley's Piraquive booted a 38-yard punt. Southern returned the punt for a touchdown and landed the point after for a 20-0 lead.

In the final minutes of the first, MVSU started the quarter with a new quarterback taking the snaps. Unable to gain any ground, Piraquive took the field again, outdoing his previous punts, with a 40-yarder. SU's next drive completed the first and started the second quarter. The Jaguars scored again, however Le'Trey Jones prevented their two-point conversion attempt, holding the score to 26-0.

On their next drive, Mississippi Valley was heading into the end zone but an interception in the end zone closed out the opportunity to score. The Jaguars fired off an 89-yard touchdown pass and connected on the point after to take the score to 33-0. Southern kicked the ball 65-yards to Booker T. Chambers, who returned it 85-yards to the SU 15 yard line. A 15 pass from Dontrinell Scott to Terrence Barron put six on the board for the Delta Devils. Piraquive's PAT was blocked, holding the score at 33-6.

MVSU's next possession extended from their end zone to the Southern end zone. Chambers started the drive on an 11-yard return and concluded with a 34-yard bomb from Scott to Barron. Piraquive nailed the point after to push the score to 33-13.

Scott connected on 12 of 20 passes for 153-yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, he also led rushing with 70-yards on 15 attempts. Thomas Stokes, Jr. rushed for 56-yards on 10 carries. Barron pulled down five passes for 61-yards and two touchdowns. Keenan Daniels added 41 yards on three receptions.

Le'Trey Jones paced the team with six tackles (3 solo and 3 assists), while Marquis Green completed the night with four solo tackles.

The Delta Devils will be back in action on September 19, when they travel to Lorman, Mississippi, to face the Braves of Alcorn State University. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
