Mississippi Valley Suffers 55-14 Loss to Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. – The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University dropped a bruising 55-14 decision to the Braves of Alcorn State University.
 
The Braves put seven on the board at the 11:48 mark of the first quarter on a 62-yard pass with Haiden McCraney adding the extra point. Alcorn struck again with 10:14 ticks remaining in the quarter, on a 24-yard fumble recovery. McCraney once again split the uprights. With seven second remaining, the Braves scored on an eight-yard quarterback keeper (John Gibbs, Jr.). McCraney added the PAT.
 
In the second quarter, the Braves marched down the field to score on a 72-yard run by Gibbs. Down 28-0, the Delta Devils' Booker Chambers scored on a six-yard scamper. Ruben Piraquive tacked on the extra point, taking the score to 28-7 with 4:08 remaining in the half. Alcorn's Marquis Warford ended scoring for the half on a 31-yard run, McCraney added the extra point.
 
With 5:55 left in the third, the Braves found the end zone again on an eight-yard run by Arron Baker. McCraney missed his first PAT, leaving the score 41-7. Baker scored again for the Braves with 57 ticks remaining in the quarter, McCraney added the extra point (48-7).
 
In the fourth quarter, Mississippi Valley's Jerrell Moore pulled down a 23-yard touchdown pass from Ruban Thurston with 6:47 remaining in the contest. Piraquive landed the extra point. Lamarvin Ashley scored the final touchdown of the contest Alcorn State. McCraney's point after wrapped the score at 55-14.
 
Thurston connected on seven of 17 attempts for 110 yards and one touchdown. Dontrinell Scott threw for 26 yards on four of seven attempts.

The Delta Devils will be back in action on September 26, when they host the Hornets of Alabama State University. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
