Devilettes Finished the Opening Day of the UAB Invitational 0-2

BIRMINGHAM --- Mississippi Valley State completed day one of the University of Alabama-Birmingham 0-2, dropping contests to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and Jacksonville State University.
 
In game one the Devilettes allowed the River Hawks to fly away with the contest, 3-0. The set scores were 25-12, 25-16 and 25-20. The Gamecocks (JSU) were also able to post a 3-0 score against Mississippi Valley. The set scores were 25-18, 25-14 and 25-15.
 
In the opening set, Halle Gayten paced the Devilettes with six kills, four digs and one blocking assist. MVSU had two players to post four kills, Marissa Chalmers and Cynthia Richardson. Chalmers also posted three digs and two assists, while Richardson added one dig and one blocking assist. Miranda Tapia posted 10 assists and four digs.

The Devilettes finished the contest against UMass Lowell with 21 kills, 26 errors and 106 total attacks.
 
In their match against Jacksonville State, Chalmers and Richardson each tallied six kills, while Kalin Barnes tallied five. Gayten and Richardson added two blocks and Zantrell Brown added one. Tapia tallied 21 assists, while Barnes and Gayten each added one. In digs, Barnes and Tapia each finished with six and Liyah Davis tallied five.
 
MVSU will take on the hosting Blazers of the University of Alabama-Birmingham on September 19 at 10:00 a.m., before finishing their run in the Invitational against the University of Mississippi at 2:00 p.m.
