Delta Devils Drop Season Opener to Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M--- The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils opened their 2015 campaign in front of a crowd of 21,930. MVSU suffered a 66-0 loss to the University of New Mexico.

"I think we played a real fine football team, that executed very well," said Head Coach Rick Comegy. "I am happy to see that we are going as a football team but we made a lot of mistakes."
 
In the opening quarter, the Delta Devils started a promising drive but was unable to put any points on the board. The Lobos took a commanding 21-0 lead heading into the second quarter. In the second, NM added 17 points to take a 38-0 lead going into the locker room.
 
The third quarter saw the Lobos extend their lead as they added an additional 21 points. In the fourth Mississippi Valley was able to hold New Mexico to seven points.

Quantavius Peterson completed one of nine passes for 10 yards and one interception, while Dontrinell Scott connected on five of seven passes for 38 yards. Thomas Stokes, Jr. rushed for 40 yards on 13 carries. Scott added 13 yards on two carries.
 
Demarius Howard pulled down two passes for 18 yards and Keenan Daniels added 12 yards on two receptions.
 
Defensively, MVSU finished with 70 tackles; 40 solo and three for a loss. Le'Trey Jones led the team with 11 tackles (7 solo and 4 assists), while Marquis Green and Ladrelin Cheatam added ten. Green had eight solo and two assists and Cheatam tallied five of each. Charles Moore got in on the action with seven tackles, three solo and four assists.

Comegy stated, "I think we needed this game to help us execute in our conference the way they executed tonight."

The Delta Devils will be back in action on September 10, when they return to Itta Bena for their home opener against Southern University. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
