HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils scorched the Alabama A & M University Bulldogs in the opening half, en route to a 79-73 victory.
Mississippi Valley was able to outshoot their opponent to take a commanding lead in the first, however AAMU refused to give up, battled back to close the gap, 48-40 going into halftime.
It was the long reach of Isaac Williams that paced the Delta Devils in the first half, with 10-points. Damian Young tallied eight points and one steal to help MVSU's offensive efforts, while Ta'Jay Henry chipped in seven-points.
Ladarius Tabb and Rashawn Green tied with nine points to lead the Bulldogs in the first.
Mississippi Valley stretched their lead to double digits but through a series of events, AAMU was able to draw closer, making it a contest. With less than one minute remaining, it appeared the game would be tied and overtime would be forced. Undeterred, MVSU held their pace steady and controlled the tempo of the contest. Forcing Alabama A & M to play their game, the Delta Devils improved to 2-1 in conference play.
Williams tallied 17-points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal to pace the face moving MVSU offense. Marcus Romain finished with 14-points, seven rebounds and three assists; while Young totaled 13-points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal. Vacha Vaughn also finished with seven rebounds to tie for first on the team.
Ladarius Tabb completed the contest with 19-points, five rebounds, one steal, one block and one assist to aid the Bulldogs in their efforts.
Mississippi Valley returns home to host the Braves of Alcorn State University and the Jaguars of Southern University on Saturday and Monday respectively.
"Tonight alone with good defense and a solid offense, we were able to get the win. We shot the ball well and I am proud of their efforts and pray that we continue to play this way," said Head Coach Andre Payne.
