Delta Devils Capitulate to the Hornets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - It was a bright start to the 2 o'clock kick off at the Alabama State University New Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama. Mississippi Valley fought a hard battle but they were unable to muster the resourcefulness to overcome the Hornets, dropping the contest 56-24.

MVSU took first possession in the game, after winning the coin toss but were unable to convert, forcing them to punt. ASU scored on their opening drive, taking a 7-0 lead. On their next possession, Mississippi Valley took the ball to the 16-yard line, however they were unable to take the ball into the end zone. The Delta Devils' Nicholas Jacquemin landed a 33-yard field goal, making the score 7-3.

Alabama State scored again on a six-yard rush, the extra point was successful, putting ASU up 14-3 over MVSU. A 33-yard scorcher from Austin Bray to Joshua Bray was outstanding for a Delta Devil touchdown. Jacquemin nailed the extra point, bringing the score to 14-10. The Hornets returned the favor on their next possession, going up 21-10.

After two timeouts back to back the Hornets regrouped to add another touchdown to their score, 28-10. With seven-seconds remaining in the half the Hornets tried for another touchdown but the pass was intercepted by Mark Pegues. Score 28-10 ASU

Alabama State received the ball at the start of the second half and earned the first touchdown just two-mins into the quarter. An interception by Mississippi Valley's Farreon Toney at the 11:01, was a brilliant defensive strategy for the Delta Devils. MVSU was in scoring position, however an interception by the Hornets in the end zone was returned 80-yards.

At the conclusion of the fourth the score was 42-10 in favor of Alabama State.

The Delta Devils will return home for Homecoming 2016 on October 22 when they host the Tigers of Grambling State University. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
