BATON ROUGE – Mississippi Valley State' volleyball team dropped a tough conference contest to the Southern University Lady Jaguars.
Southern took each set; outscoring the Devilettes 25-17, 25-10 and 25-16. Mississippi Valley started the contest serving and quickly gave up the opening point on an attack error by Illiya Trahan. The serve by the Lady Jags was well received by Mississippi Valley, as Marissa Chalmers recorded a kill. The contest continued along the same line prior to SU dominating the final rallies.
The second set started with a 10-point run by the Lady Jaguars, MVSU was able to score two unanswered before Southern extended their lead. With a 14-3 score, MVSU rallied back to make the score 14-7. MVSU managed to accumulate 10-points and were unable to topple SU's offense.
The third set was more competitive by both teams. MVSU pushed SU to the wire but it came down to determination. The Lady Jags were determined to clinch the win in three sets.
Marissa Chalmers recorded four kills while Cynthia Richardson and Brianna Watkins added four and three respectively. Kalin Barnes paced the team with two aces. Sydney Robinson and Watkins each tallied one. Brooklyn Hudson recorded 12 assists.
