LYNCHBURG, Va. – Mississippi Valley men's basketball fell 70-55 to the Liberty University Eagles. The contest wrapped the Delta Devil's trip in Lynchburg, Virginia.
MVSU was outpaced in the opening half, 30-22, which placed them firmly in the contest. A layup by Mississippi Valley's Amos Given started the scoring for the contest. Liberty responded with a three-pointer to take the lead by one. An in-the-paint jumper took the Eagles up by three. Given landed a jumper to bring MVSU within one. Another three-pointer by LU extended the lead to four. Rashaan Surles joined the scoring at 16:09 with a layup to bring the Delta Devils within two. Scoring came to a halt until the 13:22 mark, when Liberty's Ryan Kemrite landed a three-pointer. Isaac Williams scored a three-pointer with an assist by Surles.
A steal by Surles led to a fast break dunk, to tie the score at 11-all. A foul sent Darrell Riley to the free throw line, where he made both for a two-point lead. A jumper by the Eagles locked the score once more. A run by Liberty put them up ahead 17-13. Riley nailed a three-pointer to close the gap to one. The remainder of the half continued in the same pattern.
Surles led the Delta Devils with eight-points and four steals in the first half, while Michael Matlock tallied six rebounds. Riley added seven-points.
The second half started with a three by the Eagles to extend their lead by 11. Mississippi Valley didn't score until the 17:21 mark of the second, with a layup by Riley. Down 41-29, Surles landed a three to bring the point deficit to 12. A missed layup by LU and a defensive rebound by Jamal Watson gave Surles the opportunity to score a layup, bringing MVSU within ten. Mississippi Valley's scoring faltered, allowing Liberty to build an insurmountable lead.
Surles had a phenomenal game, scoring 26-points, five steals, four rebounds and one assist. Riley landed 14-points, two assists and one block, while Matlock tallied six rebounds and one steal.
The Delta Devils will travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to take on Fort Wayne on November 26 at 1:30 p.m.
