BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Mississippi Valley State competed vigorously against the Hoosiers of Indiana University, however their efforts fell short of the victory 85-52.
A shot from downtown lifted IU up 3-0 over MVSU less than a minute into the contest. A dunk by Indiana carried the Hoosiers up by five. Rashaan Surles got the scoring started for the Delta Devils in the 18
th minute. A missed opportunity by Indiana and a defensive rebound by Jamal Watson gave Isaac Williams the chance to knock down a jumper, slicing the lead to one. Amos Given gave MVSU a one-point advantage with 16:55 left in the half. A nine-point run by Indiana changed the dynamics up 14-6, before Surles added two-points for Mississippi Valley.
With a series of shots and missed opportunities by the Delta Devils led to a 40-28 halftime score in favor of the Hoosiers. Surles scored ten-points for MVSU, while adding one rebound, assist and steal. Williams added eight-points, one assist and steal. Two Delta Devils tallied two-rebounds in the opening half, Michael Matlock and Watson.
The Hoosiers started the second half with back-to-back three-pointers, going up 43-28. The first points for MVSU didn't come until the 17
th minute, when Surles went to the line to shot two free-throws, making both. Williams knew points were needed and that exactly what he supplied, knocking down a three on a pass from Surles.
Indiana continued to climb, however defensively Mississippi Valley increased their pressure to keep the contest from being a runaway. Surles completed the contest with 14-points, two steals and assists, one block and one rebound. Williams tallied 13-points, two steals and assists and one rebound. Matlock finished with four rebounds and two blocks.
The Delta Devils will meet up with the Zags of Gonzaga University on December 1 at 6:00 p.m. (pacific).
