LORMAN, Miss. – The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University were deadlocked with the Alcorn State University Braves at the end of regulation, however in the overtime period, the Braves were able to escape with a one point, 72-71, victory.
Isaac Williams paced MVSU, with 23 points, five rebounds and one assist. Kylan Phillips and Rashaan Surles each tallied eight points to assist the Delta Devils in their offensive attack.
The contest started choppy for both teams, however a MVSU foul sent the Braves to the charity stripe, where the shooter missed the first but nailed the second to give Alcorn a one-point advantage. Undeterred, Mississippi Valley next possession ended in a three-point basket by Phillips. When time expired on the opening half, Alcorn held a 31-28 lead over the Delta Devils.
Leaving the locker room after the break in action, Mississippi Valley allowed Alcorn State to land a jumper, going up by five. Dwain Whitfield responded with a jumper to place the Delta Devils back within three. The Braves went on a six point run for a nine-point advantage. Mississippi Valley responded by digging deep to tie the score at 65 when the buzzer sounded to signal the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, MVSU struck first with a dunk by Damian Young, Phillips assisted him. Ronald Strother, Jr. pulled off a jumper to give the Delta Devils a four-point lead with 2:33 remaining. At the 1:51 mark, Young once again found the basket again to push MVSU up six. Alcorn battled back into the contest with a buzzer beater sealing the victory with a buzzer beater.
The Delta Devils will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to take on the Southern University Jaguars on Monday, February 15, 2016 at 7:30 pm.
