ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils baseball team recorded its first win of the season in a 18-8 massacre of the Bulldogs of Tougaloo College.
After giving up a run in the top of the first and holding the visitors scoreless in the 2
nd inning Columbia, Mississippi, native Quinton Smith turned on the first pitch he saw of the game, sending a towering 3 RBI long ball over the left field fence.
The Delta Devils scored four runs in the 3
rd, three in the 6
th, and two in the 7
th, when Arrington Smith sent another piece of rawhide and bundled rubber over the fence for a two run homerun.
The 8
th inning started of with Smith slicing double to centerfield. Marcus Jones brought in Smith with a single, proceeding Gabriel Wadd and Alex Bravo landing doubles to score 6 runs for the inning.
For the game the Delta Devils pounded the opponent for 18 hits, 18 runs, and 8 steals. Blackhawk, Miss. native Cecil Hodges recorded his first win of the season going 7 and 2/3 innings giving up 6 runs.
Game Two:
The Bulldogs came out swinging, commanding the Delta Devils' attention in game two. Giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, Mississippi Valley shook the chill from their bats to score five runs of their own in the first.
Tougaloo went scoreless in the second, while MVSU scored another spectacular run to continue pushing the Bulldogs on the fence. In the 3
rd TC scored their final run of the contest. On the other hand, the Delta Devils were far from finish. With five runners crossing home plate in the 3
rd, Mississippi Valley had sewn up the contest as neatly as a baseball's stiches.
Refusing to let up, the Delta Devils continued to drive the ball. Scoring one in the 5
th, another in the seventh and three additional runs in the 8
th.
MVSU defeated Tougaloo 16-3, finishing with 12 runs, 12 hits and no errors; while holding the Bulldogs to three runs, nine hits and three errors.
Fredrick Spencer picked up the win for Mississippi Valley on the mound, improving to 1-1 on the season. The highlight of the second came on a homer by Gabriel Wadd in the 5
th.
The Delta Devils will travel to Little Rock, Arkansas, on March 1 to take on the University of Arkansas – Little Rock at 3:00 pm.
