ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils sparred in a heated battle of wills and strength against the Hornets of Alabama State University, falling 73-62, as a second wind swept through the Hornets.
The first half was totally in favor of the Delta Devils as they took a 41-27 point lead into the halftime break. Marcus Romain scored 11 points to pace MVSU during the first, while Kylan Phillips added eight points.
Upon exiting the locker rooms, the Hornets began to swarm, experiencing a second wind to turn the contest around. With 15:53 remaining in the second, ASU had closed the gap to a 45-40, with MVSU maintaining a slight lead. The next media, the Delta Devils had climbed back into the driver seat with a 52-44 advantage over the Hornets.
It was with 7:52 remaining that the score was tied at 52, making the contest wide open for possibilities. At the 3:53 mark, ASU had move just ahead of MVSU with a 63-58 lead.
Romain finished with 17 points and five rebounds, while Phillips wrapped with 11 points, two rebounds, three steals and two assists. Vacha Vaughn paced the Delta Devils with seven rebounds.
The Delta Devils will host the Bulldogs of Alabama A & M University on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 7:30 pm.
