ITTA BENA – The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils and Bulldogs of Alabama A & M were scheduled to clash on the diamond in a three game series over the weekend, however due to heavy rain in the Mississippi Delta, a double was played today.
Mississippi Valley dropped both contests; in game one MVSU fell 5-2 and 12-10 in extra innings in game two.
The Bulldogs scored one run in the top of the first to start scoring. AAMU would also score an additional run in the fourth. The sixth inning proved to be the Delta Devils' Achilles heel as they allowed two runners to cross home plate.
Down 4-0, Mississippi Valley dug deep, scoring two runners in the seventh. Gabriel Waddell easily doubled on a beautiful ball to centerfield, scoring Drew Wheeler. Caleb Lindsey accomplished what any batter with a runner on base hopes to gain by singling to left field scoring Waddell.
Alabama A & M scored once more in the top of the ninth to bring the final to 5-2.
Game two lasted longer than the first, lasting four hours due to extra innings. With eight pitchers taking the mound between the two teams, the game was thrilling to watch.
The Bulldogs took an early lead in the top of the second, scoring four runs. MVSU rallied back in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs to slice into AAMU's lead. Arrington Smith doubled, scoring Chris McWright and Drew Wheeler. Alex Bravo's run was the result of a fielder's choice and a throwing error by the short stop.
In the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs nailed two balls outside the fence for two additional runs. The top of the sixth saw an Alabama A & M player single but advance home on a series of errors by Mississippi Valley.
The seventh inning was totally in favor of the Delta Devils as they scored six runs to take a 10-7 lead. Marcus Jones grounded out to the second basemen but he earned a RBI for Waddell. A single by Alex Bravo brought in Wheeler, while Jones back up in the batting rotation, scored Waddell on a base on balls. With the bases loaded, Edward Cox was hit by a pitch to score Bravo. McWright singled scoring two runners; Jones and Lindsey turned up the heat to reach the home plate. Wheeler once again made a big place, singling to bring in Cox.
Alabama A & M scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth to knot the score at 10-all, taking the contest into extra innings.
Neither team was able to score in the tenth, however the Bulldogs pulled ahead by two in the eleventh to secure the contest.
The Delta Devils take the diamond Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m. for game one against the Hornets of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama.
