CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils fell 12-4 to the Statesmen of Delta State University, in Cleveland, Mississippi.
The Statesmen were able to land the first blow, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, prior to scoring twice more in the fourth. DSU scored once in the sixth to extend their lead.
Mississippi Valley's seventh inning was their strongest, as they scored all four of their runs. Cole Gullette singled to the shortstop to score Chris McWright. Gullette advanced to second on a wild pitch, while Fredrick Spencer scored. A double by Drew Wheeler scored Quitman Smith and Gullette.
Relinquishing four runs in the seventh and eighth innings, the Delta Devils were unable to uncover the point deficit.
MVSU finished with four runs, eight hits and three errors. Mississippi Valley will travel to Huntsville, Alabama, to face the Bulldogs of Alabama A & M University on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; April 15, 16 and 17.
The two teams are also scheduled to play four games to make up the one postponed in Itta Bena, Mississippi, due to weather.
