ITTA BENA, Miss. --- The Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes and the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University dueled in a heated battle to reopen the R.W. Harrison Complex. Jackson State took the contest 3-1, however Mississippi Valley did not make the battle easy.
With set scores of: 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-14; the contest was far from a run away victory.
"We dug deep, battled and sent a message," stated Head Coach Douglas Hunter when asked about tonight's contest.
Despite dropping the contest, there were several bright spots for Mississippi Valley. As a team the Devilettes finished with 36 kills and 141 total attacks. Jackson State tallied 47 kills and 28 errors to the Devilettes' 31. JSU also finished with 141 total attacks.
Leading the charge for MVSU in the kills category was Kalin Barnes and Illiya Trahan with 11; Megan Jones added six. The serving game for MVSU was without a doubt a high point as Brianna Watkins totaled three aces, while Barnes added one.
The blocking game for Mississippi Valley was present as Cynthia Richardson paced the team with two. Barnes and Watkins each added one.
Brooklyn Hudson blazed with 27 assists, while Watkins tallied three and Sydney Robinson added two.
A successful offensive strategy starts with a strong dig and Robinson proved to be a force for Mississippi Valley with 20. Barnes shifted when the team needed her to collect 13, while Jones tallied eight.
