GRAMBLING – The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University and the Tigers of Grambling State University reduced the Fredrick C. Hobdy Arena to smoldering hardwood as both teams brought the heat in attempting to capture the victory. GSU emerged with a 77-74 win.
In the opening period, Mississippi Valley was able to dominate the court. The score at halftime may have shown the Delta Devils with a slight lead (33-30), but the contest reveled a different story. MVSU landed clutch baskets and never relinquished the lead by much.
The race to 1000-career points is over for Isaac Williams, as he reached the milestone on a three-point basket, early in the first half. Entering the contest, he needed eight to reach 1000. Williams completed the contest with 15-points.
Reentering the court, Mississippi Valley showed determination and poise, as they began to walk away with the contest. With just under 10-minutes remaining, MVSU held a seven-point lead over GSU. Increasing their defensive pressure allowed the Tigers to climb back into the contest, forcing overtime.
In the overtime period, Grambling State scored 13-points, while holding the Delta Devils to 10.
Marcus Romain paced Mississippi Valley with 18-points, nine-rebounds, four assists and one block, TaJay Henry tallied 10-points, eight-rebounds and one steal.
Mississippi Valley heads to face the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University on February 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
