Devilettes Struggle on Day Two of SWAC Round-Up

HOUSTON– Day two was difficult for the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State, yet it wasn't a total waste, as the team demonstrated strong work ethic and determination.
GAME ONE

Southern (2-11, 2-1 SWAC) got eight kills each from Ranaja Taylor, Arabella Hall and Brianna Hawkins as the Jaguars defeated Mississippi Valley (2-15, 0-3) in four sets during day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Hall also had six blocks, and Vaterra Calais dished out 22 assists for the Jaguars. Bailey Jefferson collected 32 digs.

Kalin Barnes (13 digs) and Taylor Selfridge (16 digs) also posted eight kills each for Mississippi Valley. Jaime Polk put up 25 helpers, and Jessica Bell chipped in 19 digs.

Southern flew out to a 1-0 lead after a dominant first set win. The Jaguars collected set two as well, before Mississippi Valley staved off a sweep to snipe set three from Southern thanks to a .070 attack clip by the Jaguars. The Jaguars regrouped and claimed set four while never being threatened in the frame.

GAME TWO

Alexis Austin's nine kills paced a balanced Texas Southern (5-6, 3-1 SWAC) attack during a straight-set win over Mississippi Valley State (2-16, 0-4 SWAC) in day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Eight players had multiple kills for the Lady Tigers. Cassidy Jannson posted 11 digs and seven kills, and Asia Howard and Alyssa Chudian combined for 23 assists.

Taylor Selfridge's nine kills accounted for nearly half of the Devilettes' total in the match, and Kalin Barnes was limited to two kills. Texas Southern outhit MVSU .318 - .000 in the contest and outside of a back and forth first set that featured 15 ties and nine lead changes, the Lady Tigers were in the driver's seat for much of the way.
