ITTA BENA - Mississippi Valley State and Alabama State fought through four sets with the Devilettes dropping the contest 3-1.
In the first set of the competitive match, the Lady Hornets were able to defend cleverly and knock the hosting team off balance, offensively, claiming the opening set 25-14.
In the second set, the Devillettes bounced back and showed true grit, playing with heart and determination, to take the second, 25-20.
In the third set, Alabama State demonstrated the fire that claimed the 2016 conference championship. By switching up their pass and attack game, ASU was able to win decisively, 25-8.
In the fourth set, the Devillettes surged once again. Mississippi Valley proved to be a formidable opponent as they refused to quit or give in. MVSU provided some tough rallies and unreturnable attacks, forcing Alabama State to dig deep. With a final of 26-24, ASU captured the set and the match.
Taylor Selfridge tallied 12-kills to pace the MVSU offense, while Kalin Barnes added eight and Tylia Dixon finished with five. Selfridge also added two aces and one assist. Bianca
Watkins finished with two aces and Joilyn Azore recorded one.
Dixon led the team with four blocks, Azore (three) and Barnes added one. Barnes tallied 12 digs, while Jaime Polk led the team with 15 assists.
