Southeastern Louisiana 73, Mississippi Valley State 59
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley faced off against Southeastern Louisiana University in the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Alabama. While the two battled fiercely, SLU was able to take the contest 73-59.
The opening half was difficult one for the Delta Devils as the Lions were able to build a insurmountable 46-37 lead entering the locker rooms at halftime. Tereke Eckwood led Mississippi Valley with seven-points in the opening half. There were four Delta Devils who tallied four rebounds in the half.
The second half proved to be more competitive, as MVSU hit their stride, holding the Lions to 32-points, while scoring 27. The half started with a shot from downtown by Dante Scott, on a pass from LaCurtis Allen. Down by 16 after the basket, there was room for the Delta Devils to rally. A fast break dunk extended SLU's lead to 18 but Scott once again landed a clutch basket to keep the gap at 16.
With a little over four minutes remaining a three-pointer by Jordan Evans cut the lead to eight (60-52). Mississippi Valley came within seven-points with 2:36 remaining in the contest but that was the closest they would get. The Lions were able to maintain their defensive pressure to keep the Delta Devil offense off balance.
