HOUSTON – (Men's Basketball) This is a Man's World, should have been the theme song of the contest between the Tigers of Texas Southern and the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State. It was quite nice to beat the number one seed in overtime, on national television, and send them home to lick their wounds; except we have come full circle…Texas Southern was looking to return the favor. The Tigers defeated the Delta Devils 92-61.
Traditionally, Head Coach Andre Payne starts every game wearing a full suit; when the jacket comes off, usually details how the contest is flowing. In this particular contest, the jacket was off at 15:55. MVSU didn't score their first basket until the four minute mark.
Every time the Delta Devils attempted to drive the ball inside, the Tigers were waiting to block the ball of tip it out.
In the opening half, Texas Southern had a lead of nine; therefore the Delta Devils had to work harder to prove that the contest would not be easy.
At the half, MVSU trailed by one; Marcus Romain was pacing the team with 14-points and 5 rebounds. The Delta Devils would have maintained their five point lead into the half had it not been for prowling Tiger; Mccloud, who snuck in for a three, giving the Tigers a one point lead.
The second half of the contest turned completely in the direction of Texas Southern. Shots were falling flat and rebounds were being pulled down by the Tigers. MVSU applied pressure going down the stretch; however they were unable to cap the ball movement by the Tigers.
Romain led the team with 21-points, nine-rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Rashaan Surles contributed 17-points, seven-rebounds, four assists and one steal. Jamal Watson tallied 12-rebounds.
The Delta Devils will host the Tigers of Jackson state on Saturday February 25, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.
