ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Delta Devils' baseball team notched their first win of the season, when they stunned the Arkansas State Red Wolves with a game winning surge, taking the contest 10-9.
ASU opened the contest with a two-run bottom of the first, to take decisive lead. Mississippi Valley maintained their composure over the next two innings, scoring one in the second and third to tie the ball game.
With a slow fourth, the two teams shifted their focus. After the Delta Devils were only able to score one in the top of the fifth, the Red Wolves began to round the bases, scoring three in the bottom of the inning and an additional four in the seventh.
Down 9-3 entering the eighth, it appeared the game was a runaway for the Red Wolves. Mississippi Valley, however, had other plans. With stealth and determination, the Delta Devils pulled together a seven-run inning, which granted them the lead for the first time during the contest.
MVSU's defense shut ASU down in the bottom of the eighth and ninth, to secure the victory.
Arrington Smith improved to 1-1 on the mound this season. The Delta Devils finished with 10-runs on 11-hits and no errors.
MVSU returns home to host Murray State University on Tuesday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. and Delta State University on March 1 at 2:00 p.m. Both will be played at Magnolia Field.
