Delta Devils Battled the Hornets in a Doubleheader

ITTA BENA – (Baseball) The Delta Devils' baseball team put up a valiant effort in their doubleheader against the Hornets of Alabama State, dropping game one 7- 6 in 10 innings and game two 7-5 in seven.

Game One: (7-6 Final; 10 Innings)

Mississippi Valley scored first in the bottom of the first, when Arrington Smith homered over the left field wall, scoring Fredrick Spencer on the play. Alabama State responded with a run in the top of the second, bringing the score to 2-1.

In the fifth, the Delta Devils scored four runs to take a commanding lead. Alabama State scored four runs of their own in the top of the sixth, keeping the contest close. In the seventh, the Hornets scored the run that changed the contest, knotting the score at 6-all.

In a series of demanding offensive and defensive skills, the remaining innings held opportunities for both teams to score. Neither was able to score thus the game went into 10 innings. In the top of the 10th, ASU scored one runner to take the lead. MVSU was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, ending the contest 7-6.

Game Two: (7-5; 7 Innings)

Game two started slow for both teams, neither team scored in the first inning. Alabama State struck first, scoring one run in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the third, Mississippi Valley scored two runs to tie the ballgame at 2-2.

In the fourth inning, both teans scored runs. For MVSU, Kevin Gonzalez sent a long ball over the right field fence, scoring Alex Bravo on the play. The fifth continued the same pattern as the fourth, with both teams scoring. The Delta Devils was on Arrington Smith's second homer for the afternoon.

The Hornets scored one in the sixth to tie the contest at 5-5. In the top of the seventh, two runs by Alabama State sealed the game.

Aaron Barkley was credited with the loss for the Delta Devils on the mound.
