HOUSTON – Saturday's contest against the high-ranking Texas Southern Tigers was one for the books as the Delta Devils pushed the hosting Texas Southern outside their comfort zone. The final score of 91-77 doesn't reflect the true nature of the athletic ability displayed by Mississippi Valley.
In the opening half Mississippi Valley carried the lead 46-42 over the Tigers. The period was slow to start as neither team scored until the 18
th minute, with a jumper by Texas Southern. A defensive rebound by Kylan Phillip led to MVSU's first points on the scoreboard. Phillips seized the rebound and jumper.
With 15:16 remaining on the clock, TSU held a 10-six lead. With quick hands, Davere Creighton stole the ball and it ended in the hot-hands of Henry Taylor, who knocked down a three-point basket to bring MVSU within three. The Tigers scored two-points, prior to Nate Nahimy's three-pointer.
Mississippi Valley was able to execute a full-court defense while running a basket to basket offense. The Delta Devils took the lead with five minutes remaining and maintained it for the duration of the half.
A three-point basket started the second for Texas Southern, which closed the gap to three. MVSU responded with a three of their own at the hands of Jordan Evans. Phillips land a fast break layup at 18:37, increasing the Delta Devil lead to six.
The contest remained close until Texas Southern began to build upon their lead with 5:51 remaining. It was here that the Tigers went on a run to increase the points.
Evans paced the Delta Devils with 22-points, three rebounds, one assist and one assist. Dante Scott and Phillips (Kylan) tallied 18 and 10-points respectively.
The next stop for the Delta Devils will be the Panthers of Prairie View A & M on Monday, January 22, 2018. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
