Delta Devils Drop a Close Game to the Tigers of Texas Southern

ITTA BENA, Miss. --- Last season's matchup between the Delta Devils and Tigers of Texas Southern was one to remember, so the fans were extremely alert and energetic as the horn wailed to signal the start of the game.

The first half was full of intensity early. Texas Southern's Donte Clark picked up a technical foul, and from there whistles sounded continuously. In the first half, the Delta Devils shot 45 percent from the field, 50 percent from beyond the arc, and just 25 percent from the charity stripe after eight attempts. As a team, the Delta Devils pulled down 17 defensive rebounds and three offensive rebounds with Arinze Anakwenze leading with five of his own. The turning point of the game came as the buzzer sounded to end the half when Lorenzo Hunt blocked Demontrae Jefferson's last-minute bucket to keep Texas Southern from entering halftime with the advantage.

At the half, Jordan Evans lead the Delta Devils with eight points, and Arinze Anakwenze put up six points and grabbed five rebounds hinting at a potential double-double. Derrick Bruce and Donte Clark lead Texas Southern with nine points, seven points, and nine points and five rebounds.

Dante Scott opened the second half with a three pointer, and Jordan Evans followed with a three pointer of his own putting the Delta Devils on a 6-0 run. Within the first three minutes of the second half, the Delta Devils gave the crowd a glimpse of their shooting abilities as a team. After being tied at 34, the Delta Devils went up 49-39 just as five minutes ticked away from the game clock.

The second half was more engaging than the first as emotions and tempers flared. LaCurtis Allen was called for the offensive foul and a flagrant one and not even a minute later Demontrae Jefferson picked up his second personal foul and a technical foul. Scott only had four points in the first half, but after 14 minutes in the second half Scott scored 15 more. The Delta Devils lead the Tigers by as many as 10 points in the second half, yet their foul trouble allowed the Tigers a chance to chip away at the lead.

With one-minute remaining on the clock the Delta Devils led the Tigers 71-65, but Dante Scott was called for the foul that once again allowed the Tigers to chip away at the Delta Devils lead. After the Tigers made both of their free throws, Evans threw the ball away and the Tigers got another attempt at the charity stripe further erasing the Delta Devil lead. Derrick Bruce with 15 seconds left on the game clock put up a three pointer that put the Tigers 72-71 leaving four point two seconds left on the clock. With that time Dante Scott set Kylan Philips up for a three pointer yet Philips was a millisecond late getting his shot off to win the game.
