Delta Devils Fall to the Hornets in a Close Overtime Game

ITTA BENA, Miss. --- The Delta Devils squared off against the Hornets of Alabama State Saturday afternoon as they both fought to snap their losing streaks. In a high scoring game, the majority of the contest was trading baskets with neither team grasping the tempo for themselves.

The Delta Devils took a lead into halftime as the buzzer sounded to end the half. Jordan Evans' short three-point attempt was enough for Emmanuel Ejeh to put back up to end the half 42-41 over Alabama State.

In the first half, the Delta Devils shot 54.8 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from beyond the arc which is above their average; however, Alabama State shot similar numbers (54.2% from field and 54.5 from three) keeping the score neck and neck.

The second half statistically, was better for the Delta Devils than the Hornets. The Delta Devils dominated the paint (28-18) and shot 50 percent or better across the board with under four minutes left in the contest. Evans and Lorenzo Hunt lead the Delta Devils with 17 and 13 points respectively in the last stretch of the second half. Reginald Gee II and Gene Davis lead the Hornets with 15 and 10 points respectively. In what is become a trend, the contest looked as though it would be decided in the last minute of the game.

With 1:06 left in the second half, the Delta Devils took a three-point lead while the Hornets fervently tried to fight to take the lead. Alabama State's Terrance LeFlore scanned the court and drove into the paint drawing the foul for an and-one with 28.9 seconds left in the game. LeFlore's and-one tied the game at 80. From that point, the crowd was loud and active hoping that Evans would come in clutch as usual, and win the game at the buzzer; instead, the game went into overtime as the rebound bounced toward half court.

At the end of regulation, Evans had 22 points and 5 rebounds. Lorenzo Hunt and Dante Scott followed with 14 and 12 points respectively. Arinze Anakwenze added nine points. The Delta Devils played a hard game yet fell 85-89 in overtime to the Hornets of Alabama State.

In the loss, the Delta Devils outrebounded and outscored the Hornets in the paint. Jordan Evans was just one rebound away from recording a double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds. Lorenzo Hunt and Dante Scott each ended the contest with 14 points.

The Delta Devils will be back in action Monday night, February 5th, at 7:30 p.m. in the R.W. Harrison Complex. Monday night's opponent will be the 2-7 (2-20) Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. The Bulldog's last win came at home against the Delta Devils on January 8th, so Monday night should be one you don't want to miss!
