ITTA BENA (Baseball) – A double header wasn't originally on the docket for the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley and the Braves of Alcorn State, however Friday was a washout, the two teams faced off in a doubleheader to prevent a late season makeup. Mississippi Valley captured game one, 6-5 and game two ended with Alcorn gaining the victory 10-2.
Mississippi Valley 6, Alcorn 5
Game one started with the Delta Devils scoring in the bottom of the first, when Aaron Barkley sent a sacrifice fly to center field to push Quavante McGregory home. MVSU held ASU scoreless until the top of the third, where they landed one run. In the fourth, the Braves tacked on an addition two runs, going up 3-1 over Mississippi Valley.
The Delta Devils settled down to knot the ballgame at 3-all with two runners scored in the sixth. They also score two more in the seventh, giving themselves a two-run advantage. In the sixth, Fredrick Spencer, II singled to centerfield to score Wendell Rieves and Barkley. In the seventh, Barkley doubled through the left side to score McGregory and Caleb Collier.
Alcorn scored twice in the eighth to tie the contest at 5-5. Neither team was able to score in the ninth, so the contest headed into an extra inning. In the 10
th, Joshua Grubaugh reached first on an error by the shortstop and Jancarlos Aponte scored to close the contest.
The Delta Devils completed the contest with six runs on eight hits and three errors.
Barkley recorded the win for Mississippi Valley on the mound.
Mississippi Valley 2, Alcorn 10
In game two, the momentum swung in favor of the visiting Braves. Alcorn was able to score twice in the second and once in the third prior to Mississippi Valley scoring in the bottom of the third. Aponte singled to left center to score Grubaugh.
The fifth inning saw the Braves accumulate seven runs. Mississippi Valley scored their final run in the bottom of the six, when Rieves singled to the shortstop to score Collier.
MVSU tallied two runs on four hits and six errors. Nicholas Johnson was credited with the loss for the Delta Devils on the mound.
Game three of the series will be played on Sunday, March 18 at 1:00 pm.
