Delta Devils Football Leaps to Homecoming Win Over Virginia-Lynchburg

ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Delta Devils picked up their first victory of the season on Homecoming 2019 defeating Virginia-Lynchburg, 31-23 on Saturday afternoon.

Key Game Stats: 
  • MVSU had a season-high 31 points scored, averaged 41 yards per rush and defensively had seven sacks.
  • MVSU outrushed VUL 153-53 led by Dejerric Bryant's 109 yards on the ground. Bryant completed six passes for 38 yards and had one touchdown through the air.
  • MVSU averaged 4.1 yards per rush, a season-best.
  • The Delta Devils went 2-for-2 in the red zone scoring; one rushing touchdown and one field goal.
  • On special teams, Hayden Schuster made his first field goal of the season from 27-yards out.
  • Justin Read nailed a season-high three punts inside the Dragons' 20-yard line.
  • Donald Johnson's 86-yard kickoff return was a season-high for the Delta Devils and his first collegiate touchdown.
  • On defense, Volme Swanier led the charge with 10 tackles. He had four solos and 1.5  tackles for a loss of three yards. 
  • Jalen Bell recorded a season-high seven tackles with a pair of sacks.
  • Jamenta Shaw recorded his first interception of the season which was the third overall for the Delta Devils.

How It Happened:
  • Dejerric Bryant tossed a 27-yard touchdown to Jarius Clayton capping a four-play 28 yard drive on the opening possession for the Delta Devils.
  • John'Derrick Smith rushed for a 4-yard touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter giving MVSU a 14-0 lead. 
  • Hayden Schuster made a 27-yard field goal with 4:40 left before halftime.
  • VUL trailed 17-0 and used a six-play 75 yard scoring drive on a 21-yard pass for a touchdown.
  • VUL opened up the third period with a touchdown on a 16-yard pass completion.
  • The MVSU defense got a boost from Eric Powell returning a 90-yard touchdown after Jalen Bell's sack and forced fumble.
  • VUL made a play on defense with a 10-yard interception returned for a touchdown in the beginning of the 4th period.
  • Donald Johnson III returned an 84-yard kickoff for a touchdown with 12:37 left in regulation.
  • VUL made a 28-yard field goal at the 10:40 mark.
