ITTA BENA, Miss. – Mississippi Valley State University football failed to score any points for the first time this season falling to Alabama State 24-0 at Rice-Totten Stadium on Saturday. The Delta Devils were held to 217 yards of total offense while the Hornets collected 351 yards scoring three touchdowns and a pair of field goals.
MVSU falls to 2-7 overall record and a 1-4 conference record while Alabama State improves to 4-4 and 3-2 in the SWAC.
Key Game Stats:
- Dejerric Bryant completed nine passes for 72-yards and rushed for a team-high 73 yards on 16 attempts.
- Roger Totten completed seven of eight pass attempts for 28 yards finding Ryan Perdue three times for 14 yards.
- Johnny Wilson led the receivers with four catches for 32 yards and Jarius Clayton had three receptions for 30 yards.
- For the fifth time this season, Tracy Thompkins recorded double-digit tackles with 11 against the Hornets. He had seven solo stops, a season-high 3.5 tackles for a loss and a forced fumble.
- Eric Powell recorded his sixth sack of the season.
- Alabama State's K'haDarris Davis was 19-of-26 for 183 passing yards and one touchdown. Ezra Gray finished with 70 rushing yards and a touchdown. Jahod Booker had five catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.
How It Happened
- The Hornets scored three times in the second quarter and entered intermission with a 17-0 lead. First, ASU's Naytron Culpepper intercepted MVSU setting up the Hornets for their first score. Duran Bell rushed for a 24-yard gain setting up Kha'Darris Davis for a three-yard rushing touchdown at the 9:16 mark of the quarter.
- On their next possession, the Hornets took 4:19 off the clock traveling 61-yards on nine plays concluding with a two-yard rush by Ezra Gray.
- After the Delta Devils turned it over on downs with under a minute left in the second quarter the Hornets used a huge 37-yard rush by Gray to change field positions. Then, Hunter Hanson made a 39-yard field goal stretching the Alabama State lead to 17-0 at the half.
- MVSU continued to struggle on offense due to the Alabama State defense.
- The Hornets used a six-play 76-yard drive on their first possession of the third quarter. Davis found Jahod Booker for a 52-yard touchdown extending the ASU advantage to 24-0.
- In the final minutes of the game, Hanson made his second field goal of the game from 40-yards out.
Inside the Numbers
- Donald Johnson's had a 29-yard punt return which was MVSU's longest return of the season.
- The Delta Devils never made it inside the Hornets 20-yard line. This was the first time all season MVSU failed to make any redzone trips.
