JONESBORO, Ark. (February 26, 2019) – The Mississippi Valley State baseball team fell 4-2 in their season opener at Arkansas State Tuesday night at Tomlinson/Kell Field. The Delta Devils held a 2-1 lead for five innings, but the Red Wolves hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth for the come from behind win.
MVSU sophomore Nicholas Johnson went 6.0 innings in his first start of the season striking out two and gave up one earned run. The Red Wolves finished with seven hits compared to five hits by five different Delta Devils. MVSU also stole three bases and drew three walks.
Freshman Antonio Walker led the third inning off with a single down the right-field line. Senior Morgan Lomax drew a walk and then they both advanced to the next base on a balk. Next, junior Chase Colding connected on an RBI single to right field scoring Walker. Then, Colding stole second forcing Lomax to steal home lifting MVSU to a 2-1 advantage.
Senior Frank Spencer singled to center field and stole a base in the fourth inning. Junior Aaron Barkley singled to right-center in the sixth and senior Wendell Rieves singled to third base in the ninth inning.
Arkansas State hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and then an RBI single gave them a two-run lead which they were able to hold on to defeating MVSU, 4-2.
Junior Jeremiah Barr was issued the loss after pitching the final two innings. He struck out two, walked two and gave up three hits.
The teams will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m.
