GRAMBLING, La. (February 4, 2019) – Seniors Dante Scott and Gregory Jones-Rollins both scored 11 points each in a disappointing 79-57 defeat at Grambling State Monday night in the Hobdy Assembly Center. Mississippi Valley State struggled from the field with only 18 made baskets shooting 30 percent against the Tigers.
Throughout the first 15 minutes of action MVSU (3-0, 1-8 SWAC) was hitting on all cylinders leading by as many as six points. Scott's jumper in the paint gave MVSU a 10-7 cushion and then a three-pointer by freshman Patrick Rucker at the 10:01 mark extended their lead to four (14-10). Senior Tereke Eckwood drove hard through the lane and scored in traffic as MVSU led 20-14 with 5:33 left in the half. From there the Delta Devils offense began to crumble.
Grambling State (11-11, 5-4 SWAC) went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes and took a 26-20 lead with 2:12 remaining. A pair of free throws by senior Jordan Evans stopped the GSU run, but the Tigers closed the half on another run (7-1) and carried a 33-23 lead into halftime.
In the second half, MVSU was held to 39 percent (11-28) from the field and was unable to bring the deficit to single digits.
